Welcome
to Kindergarten at Swift Creek
Our kindergarten program uses a child-oriented approach to education that is based on the needs of young children and guided by the Wake County School System philosophy of how kindergarten classes should function. We believe each child is an individual; his or her learning style and potential are unique. We are proud to be a part of a school that nurtures and affirms each child's talents and abilities. The kindergarten teachers
and assistants at Swift Creek work as a team through planning sessions,
shared responsibilities, and in an advisory capacity to each other. All
kindergarten children are offered the same curriculum, activities, and
field trips.
The kindergarten teachers at Swift Creek follow the curriculum guidelines set forth by Wake County and the State of North Carolina. Our main emphasis in the first semester is to choose developmentally appropriate activities which will ensure success for each child. A sampling of units would include: All about me Down on the farm Seasonal Activities The Five Senses Literature, phonics, alphabet study, and early math skills are included on a daily basis. During the second semester more emphasis is placed on writing skills. The introduction of sight words, combined with phonetic writing, allows each child to create text at his/her individual ability level . Math skills are further developed through the exploration of numbers. A sampling of second semester units would include: Winter Birds Economics Reptiles The Deep Blue Sea Kindergarten students at Swift creek have the opportunity to extend learning concepts through the use of computers in a lab setting as well as at technology centers in the classroom. Mouse skills, locating the cursor, location and use of main keyboard keys, and parts of the computer are emphasized at the kindergarten level. Through lessons and exploration the children quickly gain basic knowledge in the use of computers. We promote the development of good character at Swift Creek, through a school-wide emphasis on one character trait each month. At the kindergarten level, we integrate character in all school experiences and have developed a personal book for the children to illustrate as we study each trait. The eight traits of character that we study are: Responsibility Respect Courage Kindness Self-Discipline Integrity Perseverance Good Judgment Special Events and Field Trips Events are planned throughout the school year to enrich our curriculum as well as to provide experiences that make school a fun place to be. In September, our kindergartners officially become "Little Cougars",with lots of school spirit, at our annual Cougar Fun Run. We have a fun unit on Birds in January. In the Spring, our kindergartners enjoy a program offered by the Museum of Natural Science as an extension of our unit on "Reptiles". This time they get to actually see and touch reptiles! In May the children visit a garden center as a culmination to our unit on Spring and are able to plant a flower to take home! Read! Read! Read! Read to your child! Check books out of
your local library that coincide with our units of study. Take a nature
walk in the woods and notice the change of seasons. Make sure your child
knows personal information such as full name, phone number, address, phone
number, and birthday. If you haven't tackled shoe-tying yet, now is the
time to start. If your child needs extra reinforcement at home to learn
the letters of the alphabet and letter sounds, make up games to play which
will support the learning of these skills. |
